Dangerous to photograph, with the constant traffic and people jaywalking, the City will spend $500,000 to make it safer. The sign was designed by Betty Willis, manufactured by YESCO in 1959. You can purchase miniature signs for your home for about $40 at just about any souvenir shop or hotel, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Nevada Cancer Institute.

Although I've never been to the place, the sign is indeed famous as we see it all over the place when Las Vegas is mentioned. I think it's worth the 40$ for a souvenir if the Cancer Institute benefits.
Just came across your site... you gotta love, love, love Vegas... we have been going to the place 1 to 2 times a year... my hubby has been going for nearly 20 years on a yearly basis... since you live there... do you know of any little places to go to?
