NYE Hawaiian Style

Happy New Year! I stopped on my way home from work today and captured this sign on Charleston Boulevard. During the rest of the drive home I got to thinking about this past year's many ups and downs, I thought I would share a few of the highlights with you.

Lets see, one of my favorite shots would be the Huntridge smoke break shot I took in February (I'll tell you a secret I drive by there almost every day to try and improve it). Ok, moving along to June... ALVDP had a nod from Joe Brown on the Las Vegas Sun's online edition. (Too cool!) Touring Dr Lonnie Hammargren's house was another highlight. In December I was contacted by The Village of Centennial Springs devlopment company about my photography! Life is good!

I would like to thank all of ALVDP's fans for stopping by and your encouragement. My wish for you and your loved one's nothing but health, happiness and prosperity in 2009.

Greek Isles Hotel and Casino

Yes, this really is perhaps one of the worst facades in Vegas. The Greek Isles Hotel and Casino is located on Convention Center Way. Another great off the Strip find.

Encore and Wynn

Here's Encore and Wynn Las Vegas. From what I've heard Steve Wynn has outdone himself once again. Reports of a unique color scheme, have piqued my curiosity. I'm sure we will check it out over the Holiday weekend.

Time for an Encore

Tonight Steve Wynn's Encore is scheduled to open. This is the third hotel and casino to open this year in the midst of this tough economy. I'm anxious to see the inside. This shot was taken about 2 weeks ago.

Things Are Heating Up...

at The Mirage again. Earlier this month the Mirage's Volcano began erupting nightly. There's even a Volcano Cam you can check out here.

Answer to Yesterday's Question...

The Beatles LOVE Theater the Cirque Du Soleil show at the Mirage. What a great show a must see while in Las Vegas.

This was taken at dusk. I just love this shot. The last time I featured Harrahs was through the moon roof on a sunny afternoon.

A Bunch of Flakes...

Snowflakes that is. Snowflakes at the Mirage. It snowed in Las Vegas yesterday, and it was 60° in NYC. Who would have thought?

Somerset Shopping Center

I was on my way to the Strip when I decided to take Convention Center Drive to get there. I spotted this great strip mall sign.

While I was composing this shot, a passerby asked me if I was a photographer. At first I was taken back by the question, I then said "yes, I am a photographer." It still makes me smile thinking about it.

Wynn Las Vegas

Shot from the car while stuck in traffic. I really like the lines on this photo. Wynn's sister hotel and casino Encore will be opening this month.

Friday, December 12, 2008

This logo was on a trailer I passed at hotel on the Strip. The National Finals Rodeo is in town. The NFR is a big event here in Las Vegas, each year as long as I can remember the beginning of December; we are over run by cowboys. I've never been but some of my friends have and they have really enjoyed it.

Another Use For Onions

Onions, not just a vegetable. I love this photo, onions in the air. This was shot last week during Sausagepolooza.

Sunday, December 7, 2008

The Stratosphere tower which stands 1,149 tall at the end of the Strip. This was shot just after sundown, thru the moon roof.

This is the Church, This is the Steeple...

Open the doors and here are all the people! I think that was the way that game went back in the day.

I took this shot from the Greek Isles Hotel's fire escape awhile back. This is a Catholic Church pretty much on the Strip, right next to Steve Wynn's Encore Hotel and Casino set to open later this month.

Village Lights

Pretty white lights in front of the quaint shops and restaurants at the Village of Centennial Springs.

The Bigger Picture...

Yesterday I featured strings of lights. Today I have the finished product, a Christmas tree made up of strings of lights. This in the park at the Village of Centennial Springs.

Strings of Lights

Last night on our way home from the Vet my dog Suzie and I stopped at the Village at Centennial Springs. We went for a walk in the park and shot these strings of lights.

Theme Day

It's the first of the month which means it's Theme Day. This month's Theme day is circles and spheres. I found this sphere in front of Lonnie Hammargren's home during his open house. I like the star indicating Las Vegas.
This month there 187 cities participating Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

Sausagepalooza 2008

Yesterday we did our annual day after Thanksgiving Swedish sausage making get together a day late. I cut up 18 pounds of meat, beef and pork which gets mixed with oatmeal, onion, garlic and salt. After that I moved up to Sausagepalooza '08 photographer.

This palm tree shadow was right next to the 95 freeway, across from the Santa Fe Station Casino.

Friday, November 28, 2008

One of the things about living in Las Vegas is we have so many cheesy double entendres, we tend to plug on without noticing them. I saw this play on the horse racing/betting term trifecta the other day. Thought you might get a chuckle out of it.

This is the Santa Fe Station a local hotel and casino, located in Las Vegas' northwest just off of the 95 freeway.

Happy Black Friday to all those who do not have to work. Shop until you drop, the economy needs it!

Let Me Be The First To Say...

Happy Thanksgiving! I just thought I would beat the Macy's Santa and kick off the Christmas season with this lamp post and banner photo at the Village of Centennial Springs. In NYC the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is underway, right now I'm only able to get a few glimpses on TV, we will get the tape delay in about an hour (just in time to compete with the NFL). When I was young I remember watching it as my mother was slaving away in the kitchen. Now it's my turn in the kitchen. So how about you, will you be making dinner today?

The Gazebo at the Village of Centennial Springs

Here's the beautiful gazebo in the park at the Village of Centennial Springs. The graffiti I featured yesterday was on the one of the panels inside. Thankfully you can't see it from the outside.

I Guess I'm Not Cool...

I spotted this "cool people" list written on this beautiful gazebo (I'm glad I didn't make the list). Obviously, written by a teenage Mensa member.

This is inside a beautiful gazebo in the Village at Centennial Springs. It's a real shame that the "cool people" had to deface it.

Wild Life in Vegas

A gaggle of geese on Painted Desert's #8 near the 150 marker, feeding on something. Not quite the "wild life" you think of when you think of Las Vegas.

Signs of the Season

I was intent on finding some signs of fall. It's been exceptional warm for us here in Las Vegas, so leaves haven't really started to change. Ok we really don't get "fall colors" like back east and I admit I wasn't really looking for 'em until this past week.

Yesteraday I was driving on west on Lone Mountain driving over the 95 freeway, as I looked to my right I spotted a few trees turning on #8 at Painted Desert Golf Course. Pretty view, it makes me miss golf, I haven't played in probably 7 years maybe it's time to dust off the clubs and get out and play.

Sign of the Times

I'm sure many of you have seen signs like these in your city. I was drawn to these I guess because of the sign in Spanish. I don't know about you but I tend to find handwritten signs on light posts offering some fantastic service, well kinda ...dodgy. I'm sure we will start to hear about people who reach out for help and only to be taken in by some scammer. These are scary times we live in.

Catchy Name

Last month when my husband and I went on the Las Vegas Mob Tour we saw this store while we were on the bus. I thought I've got to come back and check this out. So I stopped by there on my way home from work. Unfortunately, The Male Bag is no longer. What info I found was an empty strip mall storefront with a for rent sign. The Male Bag was once a male clothing store. The Male Bag is off of Sahara behind the Tony Roma's.

Put It Out-My Service Announcement

Yesterday, I tried to get inspiration for today's post but could not. I was just as troubled this morning but managed to find this cigarette butt for inspiration.

Today is the Great American Smoke Out. This is a photo from this morning just before 6:30 AM, this is the ashtray in front of the building where I work.

I will ask all of you who do smoke to give it your all to stop smoking. I know how hard it is, but I KNOW HOW MUCH BETTER YOU WILL BE WITHOUT CIGARETTES!

UNLV's Mascot

This is Hey Reb, the Rebels mascot. Entertaining the crowd during a time out.

Passing the Horn...

This Rebel fan sat a couple of rows in front of us with this obnoxious horn. I got a kick out of watching him and his father. Very rarely do people surprise me, this was one of those occasions. This boy was blowing this horn for quite some time. His dad commandeered the horn from him, and do you think that was the end of the horn blowing? Did he yell at his son? The answer is no to both questions. Instead Dad proceeded to instruct him how to use it during San Diego's free throws. Don't you love it when grown-ups can still act like kids?

You gotta love the tape on the thing holding this family heirloom together.

The Rebelution Has Begun

The pre game ceremonies at the Thomas & Mack always start the Rebels introduction with the pyrotechnics display behind the backboards. UNLV Runnin' Rebels opened their 2008-2009 season against San Diego Toreros with a 65-60 win.

Rebel's Opener

This mini "Mack" is a tribute to UNLV's Thomas & Mack Arena as well as ex Rebel Coach Jerry Tarkanian "Tark the Shark".This tribute was part of the Hammargren's Nevada History Museum. Tark famous for the Ameoba defense, towel biting (as depicted in this rending above) and more importantly the 1990 NCAA Championship.

Later today the UNLV Rebel's have their season opener against San Diego. I can't wait, I'll be going to the game and will have some great shots for tomorrow's post!

This promises to be a great season, I've read conflicted reports about the Reb's ranking I've read 20, 26 and 27. Ranking is a key word here, the Rebels are ranked again! Coach Kruger has done such a great job with the program, I think this is his year. The Rebelution begins today at 2:3o.

Aliante Hotel Lobby

Aliante's Hotel Lobby has a Feng Shui feel to it. Here we have wood one of the five elements represented with these lucky bamboo. I read that eight stalks of bamboo represent wealth and abundance; nine is even better for overall good fortune and happiness.

Beautiful Calla Lillies

Last night we decided to check out our new local hangout Aliante Station. This was day 2 for the casino. The place was packed, I guess it's good to be the new kid on the block.

These beautiful Calla Lillies were nearAliante's new Access Bar. The shade of this flower is close to the orange in the property's color scheme which also includes brown and green.

I got to thinking, I keep seeing this color scheme more and more. These colors and the crappy economy remind me of the 70's. (Atleast we don't have gas lines yet!)

Is there a parallel with color schemes and the economy? Am I on to something? Is history repeating its self?

Aliante Grand Opening

These Grand Opening fireworks, happened just after 10:00 pm PST. I was actually snoozing on the coach when my husband called to tell me to come outside and bring the camera! His batteries died in his camera so he used his cell to call me. What did we do before cell phones? Cell phones blessing or a curse? Good night all.
