St Joseph's Catholic Church

I found this church not far from the Fremont Street East section of downtown. St Joseph's is located on the corner of 9th St and Ogden. What caught my eye was the Latin Mass sign. I had heard there was a church downtown that still said Mass in Latin but never gave it a second thought. Apparently, they still practice the old traditions of the church, like wearing your Sunday "best" and women wear chapel veils just like we did back in the old days. (I know I can't believe it either, I forgot about those traditions!)
From what I can gather through the County Accessor's Office the building was probably built in 1971 and the Church was established in 1982.

Young Elvis

Here's Elvis hanging out downtown at Main Street Antiques. My first house here in Las Vegas was the Elvis Presley model. Really, I'm not kidding! Maybe we should have bought this Elvis and put him in our living room. What do think?

A very early morning.

You wake up so proud that your gym bag is packed and is in your car saving you that extra step. You go through your mental check list...water bottle...check...thermos (with extra coffee because the coffee at work sucks ) the door 10 minutes ahead of schedule! Arrive at gym only to realize that lock, key and ID are at home by the garage door. So no workout yesterday before work instead a trip to the Strip to take this pre dawn shot of Caesars Palace from the pedestrian bridge that spans between Bally's and the Bellaggio.

Strategic Marketing

Well it's hard to believe but this is my 100th post. This is photo has a funny story to it. As I venture home from work, I see this and think to myself does anyone else notice this? I always get a chuckle when I see this...Showgirl Supplies (exotic) next to Precision Grinding come on!

Although it's another rainy, blustery day here in Las Vegas, it doesn't seem to bother Elvis. He's always there for you at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip) and Sahara.

A blustery winter day

This is a view of the Stratosphere from downtown. I was roaming around Fourth Street yesterday and managed to take this photo. I like the bare tree branches in the foreground. It was a pretty gloomy day as you can tell by the grey sky.

The OG

Since, I was in the neighborhood the last 2 days and I'd mentioned the Olympic Garden. I thought I would post a photo of the place.

The Chief

This is what I love about Las Vegas, ok so yesterday I posted the very cool "Jestonesque" apartment sign, which I discovered trying to find a place to park. I was actually after this Indian Chief statue. The Turquoise Chief is attached to this truck. I swear it really is. The Turqoise Chief is located on Las Vegas Boulevard, a couple of blocks north of the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino and across from the Olympic Garden (Gentleman's Club).

You never know what you will find.

I found this Jetsonesque sign by accident. This apartment building sign is tucked away on Casino Center Boulevard. I didn't know Casino Center ran this far. I was trying to find a place to park so I could take a different photo and look what I found! This is not far from the Olympic Gardens on Las Vegas Boulevard. My guess is that this sign is from the late '50s early '60s.

The Huntridge Theater

The Huntridge Theater opened October of 1944. Located at 1208 E Charleston, the Huntridge was the first non segregated cinema in Las Vegas. In later years it be came a performing arts venue where many popular bands perormed. I remember the roof collapsed but what I didn't know was that the band the Circle Jerks were scheduled that night, ended up playing for their fans in the parking lot. While the roof collapsed in 1995, the Huntridge did not close its doors until 2004.

The Hotel Nevada

I drove by this hotel about 2 weeks ago, and I thought I saw people working on it to demolish it. This hotel is at 235 S Main Street, I have not been able to find information about this hotel, other than some pretty horrible reviews. From what I can tell it's closed and imploding it (sorry to say) would be a vast improvement.

El Cortez

It looks like someone was having a rough day when they worked on this sign. This is the marquee at the El Cortez Hotel and Casino on Fremont St. I lilke the comedy and tragedy masks.

The 1st Nevada Caucus

This is the t-shirt of Hillary Clinton's leader of precinct 2457. Today, Nevada held it's 1st Caucus. It was an interesting process, I actually liked the caucus better than the usual primary. It was nice to get out and discuss politics with other neighbors in our precinct. Although, Barrack Obama had the Culinary Union's endorsement it looks like Hillary Clinton will win the Democrat race in Nevada. It looks like Mitt Romney will win the Republican race in Nevada.

I wish this sign was clear.

I guess people can't read. Amazing how junk just appears! Have a great weekend.

The Juice is now Loose!

OJ Simpson went to court yesterday I managed to catch the last of the the news media trucks who were camped out downtown near the Las Vegas Justice Center. OJ was sent pack to jail, for trying to contact a co-defendant through his bail bondsman. The judge doubled his bail to $250,000. In order to be released he must pay the $40 posting fee and the $37,000.00 (15% of the bail amount).I guess the Juice just don't know how to stay out of trouble. Apparently, he has posted bail and on his way to Miami

The Battle for Nevada has begun.

A very enthusiastic young man was trying to rally motorists on Las Vegas Boulevard late yesterday afternoon. I snapped a quick picture while cruising by Cashman Center trying to check out the scene where the Presidential candidates' debate was held last night. Things are heating up here in Las Vegas as we near Saturday's caucus. It will be very interesting to see how things go, Obama landed a HUGE endorsement by getting the Culinary Union's nod. The Culinary Union is made up of most of the major hotels and casino's workforce.

Designated Parking

I finally had a chance to check out the new market opened about 6 weeks ago. The Fresh and Easy market which was very nice and not as pricey as I had thought it would be. As I was leaving I spotted this sign. This is the first sign I've seen like this, is this common elswhere?

Slot Cemetary?

I found these slots behind Binion's Hotel and Casino. These old slot machines have seen better days and have obviously served their purpose. More and more you will find the slot machines in our casinos are video slots and not the reels like these.

Ready to take a dip

This photo is for Jim of Terrell Daily Photo. Jim was recently here in Las Vegas but wasn't able to get these "gals" to pose for him. The Swim In Pool "gals" are in front of their 1314 South Main Street store. The store is close to the Arts district near Charleston and Main. This company has been around since 1962, I'm not sure of the age of the sign it could be 45 years old if it was raised in '62.

Something to chew on...

You gotta love this billboard's play on words. This billboard is on the corner of Sahara and Las Vegas Boulevard. This Canter's Deli Sandwich looks like a serious threat to a lot of New Year's resolutions!

Charleston Auto Parts

The Charleston Auto Parts sign on N Main Street. I'm guessing sign is from the late 50's. The small store is still open.

1 Fremont Street

This is this the sign for the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino. The Golden Gate is on the corner of Fremont Street and Main Street. This is the oldest operating hotel and casino in the city, the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino opened in 1906. The hotel may be over 100 years old, but they do have plenty of modern conveniences and reasonable prices.

Short Life

The Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino sign was designed by the same woman who designed the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign. This hotel was the first desegregated hotel and casino in Las Vegas. Located on West Bonanza Road not to far from downtown, the Moulin Rouge opened it's doors May 1955. The Moulin Rouge was popular with the Strip's entertainers who frequented the hotel after their performances. Although popular the hotel/casino closed it's doors the same year it opened, due to bankruptcy.

Honest Advertising

What a great name for a cigar/tobacco shop. This shop is downtown and is part of the Fremont Street Experience. Good Luck to everyone whose New Year's resolution is to kick this bad habit.

End of the rainbow

I found the end of the rainbow, and there is a pot of gold! Who knew all this time the pot of gold has been on Fremont Street at none other than Fitzgeralds!

After the rain

It has obviously stopped raining here in Las Vegas. On my way home this morning I got to enjoy this beautiful rainbow over by Lone Mountain. We were fortunate to get the rain and did not have problems like they did in northern Nevada. When it does rain here we seem to get quite a few rainbows afterwards.

It's raining, it's pouring...

It's raining again in Las Vegas! I know this isn't much of an event elsewhere but, since it happens so rarely here it's a big deal. On my way home from the gym I noticed this flood control channel was pretty full. This is our "concrete" river, rushing to Lake Mead.

This fish is part of the fountain in front of the Four Seasons Hotel. It was windy this day thus no water. There are benches to sit on and relax while waiting for the valet to deliver you car.

Watching over you

These lions are on the Venetian's second level, where the moving sidewalk ends. I've been to this spot many times and never realized they were there. Wendy of mentioned in a posted awhile back, about how you see things differently around you once you are looking at your environment through a camera lens. That couldn't be more true. I hope you enjoy this photo, I'm thinking this photo will soon to be one of my favorites.

P.S. They caught mountain lion about 2 miles from my house yesterday yikes! I makes me feel like I'm in the wild, wild west!

New Year's Resolutions

Yes, this is what you think it is, and they mean you no harm. They are calling you, waiting for you to walk off that extra helping of mashed potatoes or that rather large slice of pie you ate last week! This is a quick glimpse inside the 24 Hour Fitness. As you can see the treadmills are empty, but not for long. The gym will soon be crowded with January Joiners, making it will be hard to get a machine soon. Good luck with your resolutions stick with them remember it takes about a month to make it a habit.

Theme Day January 2008- Best Photo of 2007

Picking a best photo of the year, came down to 2 photos. This is probably my favorite photo of all time. This is my unsuspecting 4 year old niece investigating this waterfall, outside of Planet Hollywood's Miracle Mile Shops. Happy New Year!
