For The Gang

I had some extra time this afternoon before I met up with my girlfriends. So I stopped Downtown, for a couple of photos before going to see everyone's favorite girlfriends, the Scx And The City gang. This is the Beauty Bar on Fremont East. BTW it was a great chic flick.

Another Wheat Pasting

I've seen this wheat paste around the city and just snapped this one on traffic thing-a-majig. I googled wheat pasters and k guns got nothing. Anybody have any info let me know.

I saw this statue in the middle of a round-a-bout with in a medical office park. I thought it was kind of weird to have a round-a-bout in a what basically is a parking lot but hey what do I know.

Notice Anything?

Give up? No ink was used to create this marquee. That's right this marquee lettering is comprised of masking tape. How MacGyver.

Living In Par A Dice

Pure Las Vegas kitsch. Gotta love it. The Par A Dice Motel can be found on none other than Fremont Street.

Blue Angel

This angel adorns the Blue Angel Motel, on Fremont Street. While Rio has Christ the Redeemer overlooking their city, perhaps this angel looks out for Downtown Las Vegas.

The Sheep From Gold

That's what I come up with when I tried to translate this restaurant's name to English. Sounds much better in Spanish! I thought this was an unusual building this is located on Eastern Ave and the 95 Freeway.

A Las Vegas Garden Of Love

Today we will be attending the wedding of two of my favorite people. They will be saying I do, but not at this or any other drive thru. Congratulations Mike and Adriane!

2121 Fremont Street

I just love these classic signs. What I like about this shot, besides the groovy sign is the vapor trail a jet left behind. From what I can dig up at the county assessor's office, this motel was built in 1967.

Frist I Thought Something Was Missing

The Rangler Motel on Fremont Street, I thought that maybe it was missing a consonant, I had thought it should be spelled wrangler. A quick check in the Yellow pages proved me wrong.

And I Thought It Was...

a motorcycle club. I snapped a picture thought I would find out more about them. This lodge is located downtown near Fremont Street on 9th. The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs are part of an international order that dates back to 1700's. And I thought they were a bunch of bikers.

Get Your Check In 24 Hours!

This unusual sign is in a Latino section of Las Vegas. This income tax service in on Eastern Avenue near the 95 Freeway. I like her clock face. Has anyone received their economic stimulus check yet?

What exactly is...

San Francisco wear? Anyone care to guess? This closed store is Downtown on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Fountain At The Bellagio

This fountain is located tat the entrance to the hotel lobby. This fountain made me feel cooler just looking at it. Spring is starting to fade here in Las Vegas. It's about 95 degrees (according to my thermometer) I turned on the air today so it is official it's hot!

Poodle Tree

I'm sure there's is a name for this type of tree but for now I'll just call it a poodle tree. This is on Vegas Drive and Decatur. Happy Friday!

Little Bit Of History

The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino at 1 Fremont Street has a lot of firsts . It was the first hotel and casino on Fremont Street,Downtown, and Las Vegas as well as the first telephone, so on and so on.

Drive Thru Sports Betting

One of the cool things about The Fiesta Hotel and Casino is that they feature a drive thru sports book. This drive thru is the only one of it's kind in Las Vegas. I've been thru it once, definitely a novelty. It's kind of like drive thru banking you put your money in one of those cylinders and it goes to the attendant who you can talk to and sends you back a receipt.

To answer yesterday's question, this casino was the built by the Maloof family. This drive thru was George Maloof's idea. The Maloof's sold this Casino for $185 million and built another casino, perhaps you may have heard of it The Palms.

We All Have To Start Somewhere.

What prominent Las Vegas family built this casino in 1994 for 10 million dollars. Then sold it for $185 million and sunk the money into another casino project ? The answer tomorrow!

Drive In Part 2

The entrance to the Las Vegas Drive In Theater. There is a guerrilla movement that shows movies outdoors on warehouse walls and under bridges. The most popular one is probably the Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive In . There is also MobMov which claims to be in 27 nations. I'm now on their email list so we'll see if there is one here in Las Vegas we can check out.
Happy Mother's Day to everyone!

Last One Standing

The Las Vegas Drive In Theater on Carey and Rancho is the last of its kind in Las Vegas. I was surprised to see that it was still open. I have only been there once and that's when Men In Black was out, in 1997. They don't have the speakers that you had to attach to you car anymore, you just set your radio to a certain station.

I can remember going all the time as a kid and loving it. The last movie I saw as a kid with my dad was Disney's Boatniks that was back in 1970. It was so much fun, when you went with dad he let us get all hopped up on sugar and let us run around like maniacs. Anyone else remember the Drive Ins or do you have one near you?

Time For A Dip!

Just checked the thermometer it's pretty close to 90 degrees and almost time for a dip! I managed to capture this sign lit up at night. You also get a glimpse of the Stratosphere in the background. The Swim In Pool girls have graced ADLVP before, but that was during daylight hours. Have a great weekend.

Breaking Curfew

This six foot baby was out posing with tourists passing by the Fremont Hotel and Casino, Friday night. I turned my back for what seemed like a second and he/she was gone! (Just like a toddler.) I 'm sure this baby was part of the Gay Pride Parade. Sorry I didn't get her/his name and story.

Let Me Point This Out For You

This giant finger is pointing out the Furniture Outlet on Main Street. Not what you would see on your average tour of Las Vegas!

Monday, May 5, 2008

Can't We All Just Get Along?

This is actually a what I would call a Mexican standoff. You have this Christian woman who stands down on Fremont Street with her Jesus banner, preaching and people fresh from the Gay Pride Parade waiving their rainbow flag, chanting "we're here, we're queer" and God loves us too. (This photo is mild, things did get a little tense for a while there.)

This woman does this every weekend. I don't think she's too successful.

Alternative Transportation

As we were leaving First Friday, heading to our car we ran into Skip Wagner and his Space Bug.
The first thing that came to mind was Burning Man! Constructed from an old Volkswagen Beetle the Spaceship was originally created for Burning Man. Blinking lights complete the interior with a space "hatch" on top being only way in or out.

A First At First Friday

Yesterday was First Friday again and we were the first to have a carriage ride around the Arts District. Believe it or not Silver and Reverse navigate the streets of Las Vegas better than most Las Vegas drivers! While talking with Robert we found out the horses and animals out at Tule Springs are his. Be sure and check out Las Vegas Carriage, while you are in town or if your spending the day out at Floyd Lamb State Park.

Stay Inside The Lines

Ok,so here's my public service announcement for this month. When you come to Las Vegas and are walking around our city be sure to use the crosswalks. This past week the news has been featured how jaywalking is a big problem in the Vegas Valley.

Here's the deal in a nutshell. If you are a pedestrian and get hit by a car outside of the pedestrian crosswalk you are fair game. (Hence, the pedestrian bridges and protected sidewalks on many areas on The Strip.) Kinda like Death Race 2000, but without the points. If the driver hits you and leaves that's a whole different ballgame, then it's a felony hit and run. So stay in the crosswalk, it's just not worth the trip to UMC Trauma Center for an extended stay in Las Vegas.

Have safe weekend.
