Another Kip Siting

Kip the fish surfaces again this time, Downtown on Main Street. I spotted Kip before on a light post, not far from the Cannery Hotel and Casino in North Las Vegas. I like the big yucky piece of gum on the word Lake.

I Feel Much Cooler...

just looking at this fountain. It's been about 105 degrees Fahrenheit, which really isn't that bad for us veteran Las Vegans. I'm not sure if it's the haze from the California wildfires that has drifted into the Las Vegas Valley or the 7% humidity, but it feels terrible. My forehead is shiny, the new icky indicator .You guys might remember this fountain from one of my February EARLY morning posts, or this one I featured last December just before the New Year this is of course at a different angle, time and season!I hope everyone has a cool weekend.

Las Vegas Very Own White Elephant

This photo was a long time coming. I spotted this "beast" off of the I 15 southbound coming into Las Vegas from North Las Vegas between the Cheyenne and Lake Mead exits. Capturing this beast was a challenge, I've tried several times. It's really hard to get back on the freeway without reaking havoc. This is not the first elephant to grace ALVDP perhaps you remember this one.

When In Rome...

I know we're in Vegas but, I'm not that kind of girl...This is Ms Venus Ammanati at Caesar's Palace. She's just in time for the View.

A Cross Between...

Kilroy Was Here and I Dream of Jeannie. The eyes reminded me of Jeannie (the animated part), the round metal "head" reminds me of Kilroy. You decide.
This sewer/manhole cover is on the borders of North Las Vegas and Las Vegas just staring you down.

Hands Off!

Don't even think about it buddy...back away from the monkey's. These monkeys can be found at the gelato stand at the Fremont Street Experience. Remember you can look but don't touch!

Angels At Caear's Palace

A view from the pedestrian bridge that connects the Bellaggio and Caesars Palace. Check another Las Vegan's night shot of this same spot here.

Looking For A Great Vacation Backdrop?

Look no further...shot directly across from the Bellagio's Lobby near the "fountain of stolen wishes." I believe this would make a "picture perfect" Las Vegas souvenir.

What's Wrong With This Picture?

This lovely fountain is just across from the Bellagio lobby. I know this photo looks like "no big deal" but, these tourists were taking the coins out of the fountain! Which makes me wonder what happens to those wishes?

Las Vegas' Version Of The Hatfields And The McCoys

While Buffalo Jim Barrier may not longer be with us his buffalo keeps watch on his Auto Marine Electrical Shop, and Crazy Horse Too strip club on Industrial Road. For many years Buffalo Jim's and Rick Rizzolo's (the owner of The Crazy Horse Too) ongoing battles which began over parking spots graced our newspapers. In the end Rizzolo landed in Federal Prison for tax evasion and racketeering, while Buffalo Jim died this April in a motel under questionable circumstances.

As Jim's Buffalo looks on, the saga continues; The Crazy Horse Too is still having it's share of troubles unable to obtain a liquor license with a pending reopening date of June 30th.

First Time For Everything

CineVegas Film Festival is the Las Vegas' equivalent to Sundance. Yesterday was a day of many firsts, this was the first time I had been in the Palms Hotel and Casino, the first time to take in the festival, and the first time I received poor service in a major casino. So here's how it went...

We arrived 45 minutes prior scheduled time to purchase our tickets, we were given a number and told that we were on the wait listing. Ok that's cool, hopefully we'll be able to get a seat. We end up at the front of the queue where they take our money and send us to auditorium 9. So with popcorn and drinks in hand we make our way to see the documentary Where I Stand, about the life of Hank Greenspun, an interesting (to say the least) Las Vegan. At auditorium 9 we were told they did not have seat for us and about 6 other people. Imagine that, the people who run CineVegas aren't able to count. "Well you can get a refund", oh I got a refund all right, right down to the popcorn.

Pure Genius

I've passed this wall more than 100 times but never really looked at it. I was too busy shooting the Boxer's mural across the alley at Johnny Tocco's , and to think I almost missed another great play on words.

Got A Bust For Life...

After reading an article in the Las Vegas Sun, we ventured out Saturday to check out The Fallout Gallery's exhibit the Breast Defense: Glamour Girls for Early Detection. The exhibition is of castes of past and present exotic dancers' breasts and torsos. The dancers' casts were painted musicians and artists.
This cast is of NYC Performance Artist Julie Atlas Muz, painted by none other than Iggy Pop. Yeah Iggy and the Stooges, the band I used to play over and over on my turntable in by bedroom (30 years ago, just to aggravate my parents). Iggy Pop whose name was synonymous with the 1970's NY Punk Scene, whose one line from his song Lust for Life is now the anthem for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
If you're in Vegas stop by The Fallout Gallery at 1551 Commerce Street, Wednesday thru Saturday 12-4pm hurry though ,only exhibiton ends June 27th.

Only In Vegas...

What's the saying? Oh yeah, a picture is worth a thousand words. You won't see this too many other places.

A Glance At Fremont East

This view is from the Neonoplis Bridge. The giant Martini Glass is "Oscar's Martini" dedicated to our Mayor Oscar Goodman.

John E! Sorry sometimes I can't help myself. Strangetastes of St Louis Daily Photo challenged me to find a worse pun than Pair A Dice, so I think this one tops it. Located Downtown on 6th Street and you guessed it Carson. You don't have to be Carnac the Magnificent to know that this is not a hotel where Johnny Carson would have slept.

While I Eyeballing Yesterdays Shot...

The Furniture 4 You eyes, I found this masterpiece! This is why I love Las Vegas, every time I think I've seen it all, there is always something to top it. This is Sharon Gainsburg's stone carving studio located at 1039 B Main Street. This tube of paint faces Boulder Ave.

The Eye In The Sky?

It's no secret that Casinos here in Las Vegas have had the "Eye in the Sky" for years, after all the House has to keep an eye on its money. I found this pair of eyes staring at me on Main Street. These beautiful eyes belong to Furniture 4 You. You guessed it 1050 Main Street.

Martinis With The Mayor

Our Mayor Oscar Goodman has made Downtown one of his priorities, as well as his martinis. It was no surprise to see him on this Fremont East banner. The Fremont East is the "New Old is New"entertainment district of Downtown Las Vegas.

Plaza's Reflection

I found this Hula Girl sitting on top of a classic red 1964 Chevy Malibu convertible Sunday morning at the Fremont Street Experieince. Our Hula Girl was part of the Vegas Cruise 2008 a classic car show. The Plaza's reflection in the windshield was too much to resist.

Wayward Arrow

The Strip Centre on Las Vegas Boulevard is an abandoned building complete with an arrow made of pvc pipes and plywood. Another Downtown Las Vegas treasure!

Attention To Detail

This handprint at the end of the Art Bar's parking lot mural, jumped out to me. Just a small detail, that makes this a cool shot.

Saturday, June 7, 2008

If you blink you might miss this sign at 1511 S Main Street Downtown's Art Bar. I'm not sure how long this sign has been there, it's just too funny not to post.

Johnny Tocco's

No back alley's today, just part of the front entrance to Johnny Tocco's on Charleston. Johnny Tocco's gym opened in the 1950's, I found and article about him in the Las Vegas Review Journal, you can read more about Johnny Tocco here.

Boxers Mural

This Boxing Mural faces the alley behind Johnny Tocco's Boxing Gym. I figured out 2 of the 3 boxers Jake LaMotta and Muhammad Ali. I can't figure out the one in the middle with the 'fro, any guesses?

Artistic Iron Works

This beautiful ironwork surrounds the Artistic Iron Work's Showroom on 105 W Charleston Blvd. They create some amazing entry gates and staircases to name a few.

Fountains On Alta

This beautiful fountain faces The Suncoast Hotel and Casino on Alta Drive in Summerlin. Suggested to me by ALVDP's #1 fan MSS, this fountain is on the grounds of newly completed luxury condominiums. This shot doesn't quite capture its beauty.

Charleston Underpass

I have such a hard time trying to accurately identify the age of many of the buildings and structures here in Las Vegas. So here's the Charleston Underpass built in 1960. Here's an insider's tip about the Underpass...Don't even think about driving thru there during a heavy downpour! It floods faster than a slot machine can burn through a $20.
