NASCAR Invades The Strip

Yesterday was a busy day here in Las Vegas, lets see we had the Health Department announce that almost 40,000 patients' had their health compromised by a bunch of morons at the Endoscopy Center, a vial of ricin (deadly toxin) found in a "extended stay" hotel and oh yeah, the NASCAR Haulers parade on the Strip. Lets focus on the parade.
I got out of work a little late but managed to snag this NASCAR hauler from my perch inside the Sahara Hotel's parking garage. This is Dale Jarrett's rig which I caught towards the end of the parade. The trucks were honking their air horns while making their way to the 15 freeway and out to the track

Signs Of Spring

This photo is from an ornamental plum tree near Sunrise Hospital. With temperatures in the 70's here, we are starting to see signs of spring. We are expecting temperatures to be the same tomorrow, but maybe colder this weekend just in time for NASCAR.

808 Main Street

This building was constructed in 1947. That's about all I could find on it. If you enlarge the photo and take notice of the black arrow on the sign you can see where the light bulbs were on the original sign.

Half Cracked

They have always said I was kind of cracked. This self portrait was taken downtown on Las Vegas Boulevard at the old Nevada State Bank..

Designated Parking Vegas Style

I was downtown yesterday morning and drove past this sign. I of course turned around to take a shot. I mean come on, it's not everyday you see designated showgirl parking right?

Gamblers Book Shop

I came across the Gambler's Book Shop this morning it's near the Huntridge Theater just off Charleston at 630 South 11th Street. I love the sign ,the pigeons and the awning with all the lucky pigeon you know what. I also noticed that the doors are iron security doors, so I guess they're not taking any chances with any secrets getting out. (click on photo to enlarge)

More Miracle Mile

Here we are inside Planet Hollywood's Miracle Mile Shops, on our way to Pampas Grill. This Brazilian Churrascaria grill is a great place for lunch. The price was about $20 each for the Roidizio Select lunch, chilled salad bar with sides and plenty of tasty roasted meats. The waiters circulate the restaurant with screwers of grilled beef, turkey wrapped in bacon, chicken and pork. Each table has a coaster size yes/no disc to let the waiters know to stop or to leave you alone. The food was delicious, the service was great. I am happy to tell you that the food lived up to the novelty of the Churrasco style. We will certainly be back again, you should check it out the next you are here in Vegas.

Sin City Beer

Sin City Brewing Company inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood is another pub where they feature Las Vegas micro brew. Check out the I Have Sinned Gear here. Have a great weekend!

Empty Nest

This empty nest caught my eye last week, during my first visit to Floyd R Lamb State Park at Tule Springs. This was about 2 hours before we had a 65 mph wind storm blow through the valley. I wonder how this nest weathered the storm.

Encouraging Water Conservation

With Las Vegas Valley Water District looking to raise our rates in April this might be a simple solution! This banner has been in front of Main Street Station for awhile. The Triple 777 Brew Pub is inside Main Street Station, Downtown. They have some pretty good pub food and the beer's good too.

No Time

Sorry, ALVDP fans but I have a family emergency. This is painted on the outside wall of Main Street Antiques. Hopefully things will settle down tomorrow.

No Shirt, No Shoes...

No Dice! Last week my brother and I watched one of our favorite movies, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Remember the scene at All American Burger with Spicoli, his stoner friends and Brad "no shirt, no shoes, no dice! Learn it , know it, live it." So I decided to post these dice in honor of Spicoli and 1982.
Oops, got carried away...the dice are part of the display outside of Main Street Antiques.

More Shark Reef

This statue is inside Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, giving it the lost temple feel. I'm not sure what the statue is or what he represents. I do know he is Asian and has a pot belly. Maybe I should've saved the guide which may have shed some light on this, but my need to rid my home of any unnecessary paper took over and I tossed it out before reading it.

Shark Reef

This week included a visit to Mandalay Bay to visit Shark Reef. It was pretty cool watching them swim above you and around you while viewing them from a tunnel. Las Vegas is home to many different species of sharks, you can read more about sharks that inhabit Las Vegas in John L. Smith's book Shark's In The Desert.

Canyon Blaster

No, you are not seeing things, everything does have a pink tint. This is a shot of the Canyon Blaster roller coaster inside the Adventuredome at Circus Circus. The Adventuredome is inside the huge, freakish pink dome connected to Circus Circus. It's reasonable and a good place to bring the kids for the afternoon.

Don't be a heart breaker!

I know you were thinking I would go with the wedding chapel theme today. (Which I was actually planning to do!) However my first stop this morning was to visit our friends at Desert Springs Hospital OR, where they had this great display today. So today you have a real insider's view of Las Vegas. Happy Valentine's Day.

This was the scene yesterday near my house. Someone hit the water main with their earth moving equipment, and voila we have a geyser like Yellowstone Park. They worked on it all night. Fortunately, they were able to fix it with out turning off our water.

A different point of view

An early morning view of the La Fountaine des Mers, Paris Hotel Las Vegas. Very different from the previous post. This is what the fountain looks like while most of you are sleeping. Today we are expecting an exceptionally warm day with the high about 70.

The Springs Preserve

This is the view from the Springs Preserve Cafe. Yesterday we had a nice lunch at the Wolfgang Puck Cafe. As you can see there is beautful view of the Strip. The 180 acre Springs Preserve is just a 10 minute drive west of the Strip. Referred to as the birthplace of Las Vegas, also a stop along the Spanish Trail.

The Year of the Rat

With Chinese New Year in full swing here in Las Vegas, last night we went to the Venetian to watch the Dragon Dance. It was fun to watch the Dragon make its way through the lobby and through the casino. I am disappointed in the shots of the Dragon I took, so here is one of the banners from the Venetian lobby. Sorry, there is always next year.

Fergusons Motel and Casino

Just east of the Fremont Street Experience, built in 1946 is the fabulous Fergusons Downtown Motel and Casino. With a few slot machines near the front desk you might call it a lobby but in Vegas it's a casino. Fergusons is for sale, you can own it for a measly $6.5 million.

Barbed wire

This barbed wire is on a fence near the defunct Huntridge Theater. It's a shame that it seems to be a magnet for discarded bags and other crap. I never really looked at the detail on barbed wire before, it looks sort of like something from Batman begins... Ya think?

Elvis hood ornament

Ok, so yesterday we had the leg hangin' out of the trunk and today we have the dead Elvis hood ornament. There was also a fake arm on the dashboard. Yes, this pink classic car has it all. And to think you would have missed this if I had left my camera home!

Camera, don't leave home without it!

Saturday I had made it about a block from home when I realized I had left without my camera. I turned around and went home to grab it. (You never know right?) My friend thought I was crazy, because we were just going to the market.
When I saw this car, I thought "this is exactly why I bring my camera everywhere I go!" I don't know about you but you don't see too many pink classic cars with a leg hanging out of the trunk do you? I of course was preoccupied with the leg hanging out of the trunk to see what kind of Ford this is. If there are any Ford aficionados out there I'd be interested to find out what model this is.

Huntridge Pharmacy

Let me shed some light on yesterday's photo. Here's the sign that cast the shadow.

Monday, February 4, 2008

Smoke break

This late afternoon smoke break was captured by accident, while shooting this shadow, this guy just kind of wandered into my photo! I love the way he adds to this photo, I wonder if he even notices the shadow on the wall behind him. The shadow is from the Huntridge Pharmacy near the Huntridge Theater.

Go Red!

Yesterday was National Wear Red Day raising awareness about heart disease. Like a diva not to be out done Las Vegas, changed the light bulbs on its Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada sign to red bulbs! Parking has not improved at the sign so there was plenty of car dodging with horns honking and people giving you the New York bird, but I some how managed to get this photo.

Theme Day-When people think of my city they think of...The Strip!

Here's a view of the World Famous Las Vegas Strip! I took this photo earlier this week on a very cold, early morning. This was shot from the pedestrian bridge at Flamingo and Las Vegas Boulevard. Check out these other amazing CDP blogs:
