Last Chance

Last chance to see the Borg. the Star Trek experience closes today. I imagine it will be pretty crowded, with Trekkies coming to check out the experience one mo' time.

Anywhere But...

Here. Do you think of Las Vegas when you see this shot? Probably not. To me this looks likes just any place but Vegas. The only thing that gives it away is the City Center far off in the background.

A Light at the End of the Tunnel...

Long week, glad it's over. Looking forward to the long weekend. Three days off just what the Doctor ordered.

These lights hang above an outdoor patio at one of the District's Restaurants.

Fifth Street School One Mo' Time...

This is the breezeway within the Fifth Street School. About 2 weeks ago I stopped to take a few shots of the school, while I was there I caught the attention of Stoney who is the Project Manager. ( Stoney by the way scared the sh*t out of me. I had my back turned to the street while changing out lenses, when he came up behind me and said that he noticed me photographing the school. ) Fortunately, I did not "key" him in the "eye."

Stoney offered to give me the tour, which I gladly accepted . He was an informative and excellent host. He has done a terrific job renovating this Las Vegas Landmark. I'm sure there will be some cool things hosted at the new Fifth Street School Local that we can all enjoy and join in on!

More Fifth Street School

The renovated Fifth Street School parking lot, Las Vegas' first grammar school built in 1936.  The funny thing is, there isn't a Fifth Street in Las Vegas. Las Vegas Boulevard was at one time Fifth Street. This is the view from Sixth Street.

Closing Ceremony

Last night as I watched the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I was thinking about today's post. I thought about the most memorable Olympic moment for me, there were so  many from the USA's  Michael Phelps' to Jamaica's Usain  Bolt's awesome acheivements so hard to pick just one. So my most memorable moment of the 2008 Summer Olympic was actually not broadcast on tv, but something I witnessed. We were having lunch in a restaraunt while watching  the women's rowing when a group of Chinese tourist gathered to watch their country win the gold. What I witnessed was patriotism, I'm sure they had no idea who these athletes were but that they were representing their country. They were yelling and screaming, caught up in the moment. As the Manager walked by us he said that Rowing had never been so exciting . I would have to agree.  I will never look at rowing the same way again.

So, since today is the first day of school for most Las Vegan's I have posted a  photo of the new refurbished Fifth Street Grammar School's Gymnasium.  Not quite  the Bird's Nest in Beijing but a starting point for young Las Vegas athletes starting out as early as the 1930's.

If You live 20,000 Years Ago...

You probably would have run into one of these guys, a Woolly Mammoth. The Icthyosaur which was a fish reptile and is the official fossil of Nevada. The Icthyosayr is not to be confused with the the Blue Haired Cigarette Smoking Bingosaurus found in many Las Vegas casinos.

This Mammoth and other dinosaurs can be found along one of the trails within the Centennial Hills Park. I like this series of shots, taken at dusk.

Something to Ponder...Part 2

Aaah, something else to think about. These arches and signs are at the new section of Centennial Hills Park that just opened up. It's a pretty amazing addition that includes walking trails and an amphitheater as well as something from 20,000 years ago...

Here's Lookin' at You Kid

Not too much to say here, this Optometrist's office can be found on Flamingo just west of the Palms. These crazy looking eyeballs and glasses got my attention.

Your Job is Your Credit

This sign is across from the Las Vegas Rescue Mission on Bonanza and D Street. Was this sign and abandoned car lot a harbinger of the now troubled housing market? Did the "We finace anyone" car lot guys move in the mortgage industry? Just a thought, and BTW it's you're approved not your approved.

Blue Lady

This is some sort of Star Trek character. I've tried googling it and can't come up with her name or race. If you know let me know.

Ferengi

This Ferengi was posing for us while we were in line to get into the Star Trek Experience. Some dear old friends came into town last minute, I remembered that the experience will be closing September 1st so I suggested we check it out.

Let me give you my take on it, from a non Trekie. There are 2 rides let's call them the Borg ride and the Klingon ride. The Klingon ride was better, the highlight was being "transported" to the cockpit.

There is a restaurant there called Quarks it looked pretty weird and smelled funny. They were packin' em in.

My husband used the men's room in this "alien" area within the Las Vegas Hilton. The urinals have a panel with lcd lights above them and once you take care of business they say "may the luck be with you".

The King

Yesterday was the 31st anniversary of the King's death. This is his statue with a scarf and a lei, probably placed by one of his many fans. This statue is outside of the Hilton and was featured here back when I first started out .

I was a teenager when Elvis died, I remember where I was when I heard the news. I was spending my summer on Cape Cod hanging out with my BFF Anne K. Do you remember where you were?

Cigarettes and More!

Who doesn't want cigarettes and more! This amenity goes in the "win" column for me. You'll find these great accommodations at 1200 Fremont Street, Downtown.

The Gateway Motel on Las Vegas Boulevard near Charleston. Not much to say today, it's been a tough week. I thought Friday would never get here.

Grape Fizz Law Office

I'm not really sure that if I managed to get into a legal jam, that I would seek out and hire an attorney whose office was painted grape fizz. Oh yeah and has a NHP, Metro or whatever law officer painted on it. How about you?

This office in on Flamingo and Rainbow. The officer is on many billboards around town for ticket busters of something close to that.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

This weekend we took a trip down to"Suncoast" lanes. We met up with a friend from work for a couple of games of bowling. The funny thing is we discovered that we hadn't used our bowling equipment since 1994. As you can see by my score we were a bit rusty.

BTW when did bowling alleys start to humilate you buy posting your score above for all to read? What happened to the pencil and paper method. I can remember everyone giving some poor schmuck a dollar each to keep score.

This was the second game which was MUCH better than the first.

Time in a Bottle...

Time flies when you're having fun. Boy, that's the truth isn't it. I've had an interesting morning to say the least, I've been reminiscing about old times, old friends, thinking about where time has gone while struggling for a post for today.

And suddenly as if I was struck by lightening...it came to me...the Las Vegas Time capsule. I took this photo about a week ago, the time capsule is where else but, Downtown in Centennial Plaza. Centennial Plaza is on Fourth Street and Lewis next to the newly restored Fifth Street School.

The capsule's contents were sealed in 2005 to mark Las Vegas' 100th birthday. So, if you could build your very own time capsule what would you want people in the future to see or know in 100 years?

Making a Statement

Free Tibet and double your paycheck. What are the chances? Even sometimes the things I find amazes me. This Free Tibet sign can be found on Casino Center and Charleston Boulevard.

An American Dream.

Today is the opening day of the Olympics in Beijing, China so I thought I post this photo. I have always enjoyed the opening ceremony as far back as I could remember. The other day I was listening to NPR in the car and I heard about the athlete who will be carrying the flag for Team USA. He is one of our country's newest citizens Lopez Lomong. Lomong's story is inspiring for all, from a Lost Boy from Dafur, to the honor of carrying the flag of his new country on the opening day of the Olympic. I can imagine it is a dream come true, I'm sure it doesn't get much better than that. I can't wait to cheer him on. Check out his page here.
Today at The District at CC we have an American Flag mural on a dumpster. You can check out the the artist here. It's interesting how far we have come, I can remember when this would have offended many and created a major uproar. Times have changed either that or no one has noticed it on Sahara Avenue.

An International Dumpster

We're at The District at CC again today, this is one of the international dumpsters; with the South Korean Flag painted on it. I spotted an American Flag dumpster as well. I was checking out their page and I saw something about Tai Chi in the mornings on weekends. We'll have to check that out.

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

This one of those control thingies for public or community irrigation or maybe its for electricity not sure. My community has a plain old drab green one. This is the first decorative one I've ever seen . Makes you feel cool on hot summer day.

I came across this at The District at CC. Go ahead ask me, hey Mo just where is The District at CC? It's the shopping center at nestled between Sahara and Karen about a block west of Maryland Parkway. It's an International Marketplace that has been around for forty years.

Redneck Gargoyle

Ok, so you have this imposing gargoyle, actually a matching pair in front of your beautiful home, on the stucco wall you built surrounding your property. What can we do make it look cheesy? I know lets spend an additional $2.00 and put this sign which seems to pull it all together.

Magic Bus

You can't help loving this bus, the name just sums it all up. Spotted this on Tenaya and Whispering Sands across from Gilcrease Orchid.

Ohhhoooo Magic Bus.....

Las Vegas High School-Bridger Street

The Bridger Street entrance to the Las Vegas High School with it's beautiful art deco detail around the doorway helps date this Historic Las Vegas landmark. The Las Vegas High School is now the Las Vegas Academy, a Magnet school for performing arts.

Las Vegas High School

Believe it or not school is around the corner. You seem to see it everywhere indiscount stores like Walmart or Target. So why not ALVDP? Today we go back to school, really old school that is; with this photo of Las Vegas High School. Las Vegas High School was the first high school in Las Vegas, built in 1930 in answer to perhaps Las Vegas' first boom during the construction of Hoover Dam.

Theme Day- Metal

Here it is the first of the month again, time for Theme Day. This month's Theme is metal, I chose the Tin Man behind bars. This Tin Man makes his home above the Funkhouse. You can find the Funkhouse in the heart of the Arts District. Check out the "metal" around the rest of the world
